Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
Calculate mean arterial pressure from systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
When to use: MAP is the time-averaged driving pressure for organ perfusion throughout the cardiac cycle. A MAP ≥65 mmHg is the resuscitation target in septic shock (Surviving Sepsis Campaign). It is monitored continuously via arterial lines in ICU patients and guides vasopressor titration (noradrenaline first-line).

Formula
MAP = (SBP + 2 × DBP) / 3
Key Points for NEET PG
- Formula: MAP = (SBP + 2×DBP) / 3, because diastole occupies approximately 2/3 of the cardiac cycle.
- Minimum MAP for adequate cerebral, renal, and coronary perfusion is ~65–70 mmHg.
- Septic shock definition (Sepsis-3): vasopressor required to maintain MAP ≥65 mmHg AND serum lactate >2 mmol/L.
- Cerebral Perfusion Pressure (CPP) = MAP − ICP; target CPP ≥60–70 mmHg in TBI management.
- Pulse pressure (SBP−DBP) narrows in cardiac tamponade and aortic stenosis — a separate high-yield concept.
